Wattle Harbours — Best Restaurant with a Casino Hall

Wattle Harbours House sits where Bridge Street meets the old river crossing, a dining room up front and a card room through the back, kept easy and unhurried. Tables are laid for supper early, then the room fills for cribbage, five hundred and rummy once the plates are cleared, chips on the rail worth nothing but the count. Everything happens here, in person, on this website's own address — nothing online, no machines, no wagering. A table for dinner and a place at the cards are booked separately, so say which one you're after.

The House

“Built for Grain, Kept for Cards”

Step through the front door on Bridge Street and the dining room's on your left, low lamps, cutlery going down soft on linen. Through the back, the card room hums — chips clicking, someone shuffling too fast, the dealer telling him to slow down. That's Wattle Harbours House on a Tuesday, same as any other night.

The building went up in 1889 as a grain agent's office by the old punt crossing, back when the river was the only road out of town.

It sat empty through the 1960s, then became a house for supper and cards instead — the same brick, the same tall windows, just warmer company inside them now.

Nothing here is rushed. The kitchen keeps its own hours, the tables keep theirs, and eighteen's the line at the door for both.

From the Kitchen

Supper Before the Cards Start

Supper's laid from five, a short menu built around what the river district actually grows and catches — Murray cod, local lamb, a soup that changes with the week.

Nothing's rushed and nothing's fried in batter.

Book the dining room on its own, separate from a seat at the cards, and settle the bill before you head through to the tables.

Murray Cod

Pan-seared with Riverland lemon and buttered greens.

Yabbies

Local river yabbies, garlic and parsley, bread on the side.

Sticky Date Pudding

Warm, with butterscotch and a scoop of cream.

First Visit

Do I need to book ahead for a first visit?
Not for the card room, though a table for supper first is worth reserving on a busy Friday or Saturday.
What should I bring on my first night?
Just proof you're eighteen or over — everything else, cards, chips and a seat, is provided at the door.
Is there a dress code at Wattle Harbours House?
Nothing formal — tidy and comfortable is fine for both the dining room and the card room.
Can I just watch before I play?
Yes, most tables are happy to have a quiet spectator until you're ready to sit down.
Do the chips cost anything?
No — chips are handed out to keep score and carry no cash value at all.
Is Wattle Harbours House easy to find on Bridge Street?
It's on the river side of Bridge Street, close to the old crossing, with parking right outside.
What happens if I turn up without booking?
Walk-ins are welcome at the card room whenever a table's free; supper is easier if you call ahead.

What to Know Before You Sit Down

Eighteen and over only, no exceptions — bring ID if you look anywhere close to the line, the door staff will ask.

Chips are for counting the game, nothing more; they carry no cash value and never leave the building, win or lose.

Everything happens here in person at Bridge Street — there's no online table, no app and nothing to download.

A seat at the cards isn't guaranteed after nine; earlier tables are held for the first five hundred hands of the night.

The kitchen and the card room run on separate bookings, so say which one you want when you call.

Through the Back

Casino Hall: Six Tables Under the Old Roof Beams

Six felt tables sit under the original roof beams, spaced enough that one table's laughter doesn't drown the next table's count. A house dealer works each one, calling the game and keeping the chips honest.

Five hundred runs early, euchre after supper, rummy and canasta once the room thins out. Friendly poker with no buy-in closes most nights, chips settling nothing but bragging rights.

Nothing here is fitted with a screen or a machine — no gaming machines of any kind, just cards, a felt top and whoever's dealing that hour.

Book a Table or a Seat at Cards

Whether it's supper up front or a seat through the back, Wattle Harbours House takes bookings by phone for both — separately, since one doesn't guarantee the other. Eighteen and over, every night.
